Probably the most significant aspect of mentoring versus other more well know approaches to personal and professional development is that a mentor shares their own personal experience as an integral aspect of the approach and process they use.
A Short Story: Mentoring and the Hero’s Journey
Without understanding it at the time I began searching for a guide, someone who could and would lead me to the threshold of the transformation that I was seeking. In my case my search ended and the adventure truly began when I met the man who would mentor me for the next seven years of my life, Roye Fraser. This was my personal introduction to the profound transformative potential of mentoring. It would not be too much to say that my life changed beyond recognition over those seven years Today my life is indeed very different … in an entirely different way I would say that today I really do have it all. Exactly what mentoring is and how it works is what I’d like to share with now …

What Mentoring Is … And Is Not
Let’s get it out of the way early and begin with what mentoring is not – mentoring IS NOT coaching.
“Executive coaching means regular meetings between a business leader and a trained facilitator, designed to produce positive changes in business behavior in a limited time frame.”
Executive coaches, as a general rule,
- do not share their own experience (as do mentors)
- do not give advice (as do consultants)
- do not impart specific knowledge (as trainers do)
- avoid personal issues( the role of a counselor, therapist or life coach)

This definition clarifies – who coaches are – trained facilitators (not acting as consultants, counselors, trainers or mentors), what coaches do – produce positive changes in business behavior, when things happen – on a set schedule within a limited time frame. By this definition of coaching, which seems to be all the rage right now, a significant difference between coaches and mentors are that, coaches do not share their personal experience. This of course is in direct opposition to one of the most essential aspects of what MythoSelf Mentors do.
Coaching as it’s taught and practiced (especially by folks who are trained/certified as professional coaches) is often also exclusively Socratic, with the coach limited to facilitation through asking questions designed to provoke access to the clients existing, internal resources. MythoSelf Mentoring is not limited to a Socratic approach and just as often, or more often, is reactive and prescriptive offering direct input and guidance to the client, bringing them new resources that they did not possess themselves prior to the mentoring encounter.
Now About MythoSelf Private Work …
The expectation within the MythoSelf Private Work mentoring model is that the MythoSelf Mentor brings significant life and professional experience and expertise to each engagement … and they are ready, willing and able to share in a highly competent and professional way that’s particularly applicable to a client’s needs and desires in the moment. There is also an expectation for a MythoSelf Mentor to possess deep expertise and highly developed semantic and somatic skill in using the applied mythological approach of the MythoSelf Process to working with clients. The MythoSelf Process uncovers and re-installs a profoundly powerful operating state that becomes somatically accessible at all times and in all contexts.
MythoSelf Private Work is grounded in the premise that there are two fundamental positions or ways of operating:
- A) from the Excitatory position, where you are positively oriented and organized in relation to possibilities
- B) from the Inhibitory position, where you are negatively oriented and organized in relation to limitations
MythoSelf Private Work gives you the tools to make the choice to live your life from the excitatory position … being at your best and accessing your individual Success Blueprint.
What this means to you is that once you’ve experienced the transformation inherent in moving from the inhibitory position to the excitatory position as the baseline you operate from your life begins to open to you in a profoundly different way … you’ll find your unique path, you’ll begin producing extraordinary outcomes on your own and with others, you’ll begin to experience your life as effortless …

MythoSelf® Private Work Options with Joseph
There are a few different ways I do Private Work, these range from one-to-one intensive individual mentoring to small group mentoring options.
The significant differences beyond whether the mentoring is provided one-to-one or in a a group have to do with the amount of time over which the mentoring is provided, the intensity of the mentoring experience and the intention behind the mentoring outcome.
Generally speaking what unites all the mentoring I do is that it is based in the MythoSelf Process, beginning with defining the way you are at your best and moving from there onto what to be doing when you’re like this that reinforces you being and remaining at your best. The essential intention the mentoring I provide in this way is to establish what I call a “Zero Compromise” position from which to be creating your outcomes.
In addition the mentoring I provide to small business owners as a Certified Mentor of Alan Weiss’ Mentor Mastery program includes access to Alan’s mentor forums, newsletter and archives.
The outstanding benefit of all MythoSelf Private Work is the sense of balance and power you are likely to begin experiencing virtually immediately as a result of our work together. Most of my clients report that their sense of being absolutely on track in their lives increases exponentially during their time working with me and so will yours, consequently the results you’ll produce will be extraordinarily powerful.
There are two levels of Individual Mentoring I currently offer:
Three sessions per month, either face-to-face or remotely, of between 45 minutes and one hour. Plus unlimited telephone and/or email follow up as necessary to assist in clarifying and implementation based on the work we do together during our private sessions. This is the perfect way for committed individuals to move forward with precision and efficiency. By committing to remaining in regular contact, including follow-up email and telephone contact to receive additional tactical input, you will find yourself progressing with a remarkable rapidity. This is a powerful program of personal transformation.
Preferred Private Work clients receive preferential ‘concierge” level service at all times, including: up to three sessions per month, either face-to-face or remotely, of between 45 minutes and two hours, and up to one half day face-to-face session per month in lieu of two extended remote sessions as requested (to be arranged at a mutually convenient date). In addition Preferred Private Work clients can request a half-day or full day session at the client location with sufficient notice for only the additional cost of direct expenses (to be arranged at a mutually convenient date, N.B.: a half-day or full day session at the client location will replace all three extended remote sessions for the month). Preferred Private Work clients also have access to unlimited telephone and/or email follow up as necessary to assist in clarifying and implementing based on the work we do together during our private sessions.
Preferred Private Work is the perfect way for individuals with specific intentions to implement a personal or professional project effectively. It is also the preferred way for executives, entrepreneurs, business owners and private practice professionals to engage Dr. Joseph Riggio in Private Work. This is the only Private Work option that includes input from Joseph regarding specific organizational leadership issues, including strategic consulting as necessary. Upon request Joseph will also meet with you and any of your team that you desire when working with you on location, either together as a group or individually.
MythoSelf Intensive Mentoring is designed for elite performers – entrepreneurs, professionals, executives, etc. – who desire the most intensive and impactful experience that is possible. MythoSelf Intensive Mentoring allows you to receive the maximum benefit in the shortest possible time span. MythoSelf Intensive Mentoring is of a full one or two days in duration, and is always provided in a face to face format, with six months to a full year of follow-up access to me without limitation.
